Bridge Team Management Refresher, 1 day (Online)

Purpose and course content:

The purpose of the “Bridge Team Management, Refresher” course is to review the main topics of resource management and to provide a training environment that develops competencies to improve operational safety and efficiency on board ships.

After completing the course, the participant will have refreshed their knowledge, understanding, and awareness of the importance of the human factor in connection with ship operations.

The participant will also have gained a foundation for applying and developing bridge management skills, both during routine tasks and under critical circumstances.

The participant will likewise have specific tools to improve cooperation, communication, leadership, decision-making, and resource management, as well as an understanding of how these BTM skills contribute to redundancy and increased safety.

The course is conducted through a combination of theoretical presentations and supervised training in a full-mission bridge simulator. The simulators at SIMAC are capable of simulating the overall operational situation on board a ship. The specific exercises, scenarios, and configurations in the simulators are adjusted according to the participants’ professional experience.

The course includes a review of the following topics:

• Definition of BTM
• Resource management
• Near misses and accidents
• Communication methods, perception, questioning techniques
• Team balance, assertiveness, flexibility
• Stress effects and stress signals
• Situation assessment and decision-making
• Principles of planning and practical planning
• Effective communication
• Leadership functions

Admission requirements/target group:

The course is aimed at dual officers/bridge officers on all types of vessels.

The course complies with the standards in A-II/1 and A-II/2 of the STCW Convention, including the Manila Amendments.
